I would just like to say that as I often work with LGBT clients I have found some of this HD&S course content relevant and interesting. I work with many young people who have been through the CAMHS system and have felt unable to express their fears around sexuality. 1 in 2 LGBT people self harm yet education in schools is still sparse and when it does happen really not helpful and education for parents is non existent. A simple comment from a parent when a YP approaches them about the possibility of being gay such as "We would be fine with it but we would rather yo were not, your life would be a lot easier and we want the best for you" well intentioned but the message is that it is not OK. We all as parents give our children unconscious messages and we never get it completely right but the media could also do a lot more to help educate. There has been a huge amount on radio 4 about Trans people of late which is brilliant but nothing about educating parents around how to deal with sexuality. Young people don't listen to radio 4 and I have not heard anything on other channels nor seen anything helpful or pertinent on TV (I may be wrong, I don't watch much)
I have been supporting an LGBT young peoples group in this area who are finding it almost impossible to get funding. LGBT young people do not know where to turn and often because their peer groups are bullying them. They all feel that there is no information out there for them or to educate others. I wonder if there may be some other therapists who have media experience who may be interested in starting a media campaign to educate parents, teachers and the general public on how to approach sexuality issues with YP?
